The wind window – Kitesurfing lessons in Vung Tau
We’re talking on that blog entry of our kitesurfing lessons in Vung Tau, about the wind window. That concept it’s intended to explain the trip of your kite from one side of the wind window -our left side, by instance- until the other side -the right one-
We are trying on that blog entry to explain you that this trip of the kite through the wind window is what will help us to understand how to proceed to launch and land our kite, and next, to be able to get the right amount of pull to allowe us to stand up on our board and start riding
That window -space from one to the other end- , must, in the first place, be identified by making sure we find the wind direction, by looking straight forward to it and turn our face slowly in both directions.
Considering that if your nose it’s pointing in the direction in which wind is arriving, the turn of our head to the left and to the right, it it’s what marks the wind window.
Once clarified that matter, we have to notice that all that lies before us is the power zone.
We should then chose the further point from any obstacle in the extremes of the wind window and launch our kite at 90 degrees of the incoming wind.
This movements have to be performed slowly, carefully and smoothly.
We will park the kite up on the air at an approximate 50 degrees angle from the ground and walk towards the water.
We have to keep in mind the different angles in which we will steer the kite to get the maximum power to be able to break the inertia and start riding.
When we are already up on the board and riding we should steer the kite from near 12 towards 10 o’clock -or from 12h towards 14h-, considering that the higher the kite, the less pull we will get, and opposite, the lower the kite in the wind window, the more pull we will achieve
To compensate the pull of the kite we will keep our front leg always stretched and we will apply pressure with our left leg on the edge of our kiteboard.
One case in which it is necessary to understand the wind window, it is, by instance, in case of a windfall -if that it is not a total windfall- of course.
In case of a windfall and in order to be able to reach the beach again, we have to position our kite at the best possible angle, the closest to the water surface, to get some power in that direction.
By approximately keeping the kite at 45 degrees angle or better yet by steering our kite from 60 degrees angle until 30 degrees angle, back and forth
To proceed to self rescue, keep your kite at 45 degrees angle with the water surface
In any case, a good understanding of the wind window and if we arrive to manage the best angle of the kite in our rides, will guarantee us also the best outcome of our kitesurfing rides
